Over the years, slider doors can take quite a bit of wear and tear. With constant use and exposure to changing temperatures, moisture, and the elements, even a quality door can eventually begin to show its age. What once opened and closed effortlessly may start to stick or feel heavier, the track can become worn, seals can deteriorate, and drafts may begin to make their way into the home. In some cases, the glass, frame, hardware, or overall appearance can also begin to look dated.

For this North Wales homeowner, replacing an aging slider door was an opportunity to address those signs of wear while giving the home a fresh, updated look. A slider door is often one of the most frequently used entry points to a backyard, patio, or deck, so having a door that operates smoothly and provides a comfortable transition between the indoors and outdoors can make a noticeable difference in everyday life.

The project focused on replacing the existing slider with a new, updated door that would provide improved functionality and a clean appearance. An aging slider door may seem like a small part of the home, but when it becomes difficult to operate, drafty, worn, or outdated, replacing it can make a noticeable difference.

For this North Wales homeowner, the project delivered a refreshed look, improved functionality, and a new slider door ready to be enjoyed for years to come.

The homeowners wanted to completely transform the front of their home, replacing the existing stucco with a siding system that would provide a fresh appearance, improved durability, and greater flexibility for adding architectural detail. Rather than simply installing new siding over the existing stucco, the project was approached as a full exterior renovation, beginning with the removal of the existing stucco and preparation of the home for its new cladding system.

Removing the stucco allowed the exterior to be properly prepared before the new siding was installed. As part of that preparation, a HydroGap moisture barrier was installed behind the new siding. This added layer of protection helps manage moisture behind the exterior cladding while providing a properly prepared surface for the new siding system.

For the new exterior, the homeowners selected James Hardie Cedarmill 8" siding. The design incorporates both horizontal and vertical siding, creating a combination of textures and directions that adds depth and definition to the front of the home. Instead of having one continuous siding pattern, the different orientations help break up the façade and emphasize the home's architectural features.

The homeowners chose the Cedarmill finish to bring a more traditional, dimensional appearance to the exterior while moving away from the look and maintenance concerns associated with the previous stucco façade. The new siding provides a clean, cohesive appearance while offering the durability and long-term performance homeowners expect from fiber cement siding.

The siding installation was paired with substantial white James Hardie trim to create contrast and sharpen the home's exterior lines. The project included 11" white fascia trim and 4" white Hardie trim, framing the new siding and creating clean transitions around the home's architectural details. The white trim also helps draw attention to the windows and entry door while giving the entire front elevation a more finished appearance.

The exterior updates extended beyond the siding itself. The project also included replacement windows and one replacement door, allowing these areas to be coordinated with the new siding and trim rather than leaving older components surrounded by a completely new exterior. Aluminum caps were installed around the windows and door to provide a clean, finished transition and reduce the amount of exposed exterior material requiring ongoing maintenance.

Another important part of the renovation was the home's gutter system. The existing standard gutters were replaced with upgraded 6" K-style gutters. The larger gutter profile provides increased water-handling capacity and helps direct rainwater away from the home and its foundation. Visually, the new gutters also complement the updated trim and complete the exterior with a more substantial, finished appearance.

One of the biggest advantages of completing all of these improvements as part of one project was the ability to create a cohesive exterior from top to bottom. The siding, trim, windows, door, aluminum capping, and gutters were all selected and installed as components of the same overall renovation rather than as separate updates.

The finished result is a dramatic change from the home's original stucco exterior. The combination of James Hardie Cedarmill siding, horizontal and vertical siding details, crisp white trim, updated windows and door, aluminum caps, HydroGap moisture protection, and 6" gutters gives the front of the home a completely refreshed appearance while addressing both aesthetics and exterior performance.

What started as a dated stucco façade became an opportunity to rethink the entire front elevation. The completed renovation gives the homeowners a durable, low-maintenance exterior with added architectural character and a timeless look that will continue to complement the home for years to come.

For this project, the homeowners were dealing with several exterior components that had reached the point where repairs or replacement could no longer be put off. Their second-floor deck had an existing Polywood surface that was ready to be fully replaced, while the home's approximately 20-year-old asphalt roof had developed a significant leak.

The roofing issue was particularly concerning. During periods of heavy rainfall, water was entering the home, making it clear that the existing roof was no longer providing the protection the homeowners needed. Rather than continuing to chase a recurring leak with temporary repairs, the project provided an opportunity to address the aging roofing system and several other exterior areas at the same time.

Replacing the Aging Second-Floor Deck

The second-floor deck had provided the homeowners with valuable outdoor living space, but the existing Polywood decking had reached the point where a full replacement was necessary.

Instead of simply repairing isolated areas, the homeowners chose to move forward with a TimberTech redeck. The existing deck structure could be utilized while the worn decking surface was replaced with a new TimberTech surface, giving the outdoor space a completely refreshed appearance.

The redeck provides the homeowners with an updated outdoor living area while offering the durability and low-maintenance benefits associated with TimberTech decking.

Addressing the 20-Year-Old Roofing System

The roof presented the most immediate concern. At approximately 20 years old and actively leaking during heavy rain, the existing asphalt roofing system had reached the end of its serviceable life.

Preferred Home Improvement installed a new IKO Shingle Style Roof Fast System using Brown Ice shingles. The roofing installation also included ice and water shield to provide additional protection in vulnerable areas where water intrusion can be a concern.

The new roofing system gives the home a fresh appearance while creating a more dependable protective layer between the home and the elements.

Improving Water Management

Because proper water drainage is an important part of protecting the roof and exterior of the home, the project also included new seamless gutters and downspouts.

We installed 31 feet of 6" seamless gutters along with 35 feet of 3" x 4" downspout, both in white. The updated gutter system provides a clean finished appearance while helping direct rainwater away from the home.

The project also included brown smooth counter flashing, coordinating with the new roofing system and providing a finished transition at the appropriate roof areas.

Updating the Entryways

The exterior transformation continued with new entry doors. The homeowners selected a ProVia Legacy single entry door as well as a ProVia Legacy French entry door.

These upgrades provide more than a cosmetic improvement. New entry doors can dramatically change the appearance of a home's exterior while creating a more polished and welcoming entrance.

Sometimes a home improvement project begins with a simple goal: making an existing feature better suit the home and the homeowner's needs. For this project, the existing bow window was larger than desired, and the homeowners wanted to remove it and replace it with a smaller, more practical window while ensuring both the interior and exterior were properly finished.

The project began with the complete removal of the existing bow window and surrounding trim. Because the new window was significantly smaller than the original opening, this was more than a standard window replacement. The opening needed to be carefully reframed and rebuilt to accommodate the new design.

Our team provided and installed the necessary framing and plywood to reduce the size of the opening before preparing both the interior and exterior for the new window installation. Trex housewrap and tape were installed to help properly protect and seal the exterior wall, while the interior was rebuilt with new sheetrock. The sheetrock was then spackled and sanded, leaving the area prepared for the homeowner's final paint finish.

For the exterior transformation, Azek window and door trim was installed around the new window to create a clean, finished appearance. White Charter Oak vertical soffit was also installed, and two siding elevations were completed to blend the newly reconstructed area into the existing exterior.

Inside the home, the new window was finished with Colonial-style interior window trim for a polished and traditional appearance. The centerpiece of the project was an OKNA CA700 Series double casement window, providing a smaller profile that better suited the space while still bringing natural light and functionality into the room.

What began as an oversized bow window was transformed into a completely rebuilt and properly finished wall opening with a window that better fits the homeowner's vision. From framing and weather protection to siding, trim, drywall, and the final window installation, every part of the transition was addressed to create a seamless result inside and out.
